That Bollywood Feeling
If you grew up watching Bollywood, you already know what autumn looks like. Two people under a golden tree, leaves falling all around them, that warm amber light making everything glow. Growing up, I always thought autumn like that only existed in films somewhere far away, more dramatic, more beautiful than anything we could ever experience. After making Australia our home, I discovered the beauty was right here all along.
Sydney Does Autumn Beautifully
From early April to May, Sydney settles into something magical. The humidity of summer finally lifts. The days stay warm and sunny that gorgeous clear blue-sky kind of warm but the evenings carry a cool crispness that makes you reach for your favourite knit. That 14-to-22-degree window is the sweet spot. Warm enough for a coffee outside in the afternoon. Cool enough to feel, just a little, like you're living inside a Bollywood frame.
And if you've never driven out to the Blue Mountains in autumn please do. Leura, Blackheath, Mount Wilson the trees turn in shades of burnt orange, deep red and golden yellow that genuinely take your breath away. That cinematic autumn we grew up watching on screen? It's right here, a couple of hours from home.
The Season of Coming Inside
Autumn is also the season that brings us back indoors and I love that about it.
After summer's long bright days, there's something deeply comforting about drawing the curtains earlier, making a warm drink, and settling in. It's the season that gives you permission to slow down without guilt.
And it's the season where a candle finally feels right again.:
There's something about candlelight in autumn that just works. The warm flicker against the cool air. A woody, spiced scent filling the room. The gentle crackle of a wooden wick that sounds like company. It doesn't change your evening it just shifts it. Warmer, Slower, More intentional, Golden afternoons, Cool evenings. The world slowing down just enough for you to notice it. Put on your favourite Bollywood playlist. Light something warm and woody. Let the evening be slow.
